Danville was one of the largest iron manufacturing centers in the United States during the mid nineteenth century. By 1870 there were eight blast furnaces, four rail mills and a number of puddle mills, foundries and machine shops. The Reading Iron Works, known as "The Big Mill" is pictured above. Many immigrants came to Danville in search of work in the iron mines and the mills: the Welsh, English and Irish, among others. It was at the Montour Iron & Steel works that the first T-rail was manufactured.
